Prostitutes call for legal changes in fight against AIDS

SAPA, 12 July 2000

Durban - The Network for Sex Workers - a global organisation representing prostitutes - said on Wednesday the fight against Aids would be futile if the world continued to marginalise sex workers.

Representatives of the group, speaking at the 13th International Aids Conference, said they wanted prostitutes to be accorded the same status as other professions, e-tv news reported.

Efforts to curb the spread of Aids should focus on revamping laws that prevent prostitutes from accessing legal and health services, the group said.
