Death of Saidi Barre

By Emmanuel K. Twesigye, 2 January 1995

Saidi Barre the former military dicator of Somalia has died of a heart attack inLagos, Nigeria where he has been living in exile.

Compared to Idi Amin who still thrives in Saudi Arabia, and still plots on how to return to Uganda (where he is the self-proclaimed life President!), Barre seemed to have taken his fate more pessimistically! He seems to have been the only person who could ever unify and hold his feuding cow boys together!

That is one dictator down a few still to go! However, in getting rid of dicators Africa has to count the cost! Barre’s Somalia was better off under his dictatorship than the political anarchy, bloodshed and starvation following his overthrow. So after, all some dicators may prove to be vindicated by history!

History may eventualy smile on Obote, and Museveni! It is always better to have a benevolent dictator than freedom and political chaos as in the case of Somaliaand Liberia!
