State-run Radio in Sierra Leone Announces Military Coup

Dow Jones News. 16 January, 1996

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone

State-run radio announced that military ruler Capt. Valentine Strasser had been ousted in a coup.

The announcement said Brig. Julius Maada Bio had replaced Strasser, who came to power in April 1992 in another military coup.

Soldiers surrounded the radio station in the capital, Freetown. There was no immediate indication of bloodshed.
