Civil Servants Call Off Strike

KINSHASA, CONGO (PANA) - Civil servants in the Democratic Republic of Congo Wednesday called off their strike started 2 August, following an agreement signed Tuesday between the government and the umbrella of trade unions of the civil service.

According to the agreement, the government pledged to convene "without delay" a meeting with the unions to discuss the plight of the civil servants.

The government also pledged to pay all salary arrears owed civil servants in the provinces as soon as possible.

Civil servants were pressing for the payment of salary increases - varying between 150 and 800 US dollars - promised by the governement for June.
