Government Presents Budget Next Week

Port Louis, Mauritius - The Seychelles education ministry will have the largest allocation in the 2001 national budget of around 1,225,536,000 rupees to be presented to parliament next Tuesday.

According to figures published in the Official Gazette released Tuesday in Mahe and monitored in Port Louis, the proposed allocation for the year 2001 represent an increase of 41,788,000 Rupees over the 2000 budget.

Among the ministries and departments, Education gets an allocation of 139 million Rupees, an increase of one million rupees over the 2000 figure.

The Ministry of Health follows it with an allocation of 137,225,000 rupees compared with 135,244,000 rupees in 2000.

The Department of Internal Affairs gets 67,890,000 rupees and the Ministry of Defence 60 million rupees. Both represent slight increases over the 2000 figures.

Parliamentary debates will start on 21 December.
