Workers Petition House On Wages

By Eric Lakidi, New Vision (Kampala), 7 December 2000

Kampala, Uganda—Trade unionists have petitioned Parliament to persuade the Government pay the living wage it promised workers.

Valerian Mutekanga, the General Secretary of Uganda Building Construction, Civil Engineering, Cement and Allied Workers' Union said yesterday that the Government had not lived up to its promise.

Addressing a news conference at City Annex Restaurant in Kampala yesterday, Mutekanga called on Parliament to speed up the enactment of new labour laws, which would motivate people to work hard.

He said the Government should show its commitment and pay workers a living wage to improve their welfare. He said the current laws are outdated and should be scrapped.
