The Colombian Communist Party has issued an urgent appeal for protests against the Colombian government's "genocidal attacks on the Patriotic Union Party," a left-wing opposition party. The Colombian government has sent paramilitary forces into areas of heavy support for the Patriotic Union in an effort to destroy the party and all areas of Communist influence in the country.
Dozens of Communists and supporters of the Patriotic Union were killed in government-inspired massacres last month.
