More C&&W staff to go

The Kingston Times, 8 May 2000

Hundreds of Cable and Wireless workers are now gearing themselves for the unemployment line, as the company seeks to implement phase two of its "reengineering" exercise currently underway, next month.

The restructuring programme, which began in 1998, manifested itself last year with almost 300 posts being made redundant. This time around, company sources say that the telecommunications monopoly gis now gearing itself to withstand the competition in cellular services, which is set to come on stream by early next year.

However, sources close to the company are reporting that the staff are apprehensive regarding the upcoming exercise, and are speculating that productivity is being affected.
