Union keen to propose

Kingston Times Sunday, 19 March 2000

Kingston, 00.03.16 -- March 16 - The National Workers Union (NWU) says it has written to the Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and Planning requesting a copy of the draft report relating to the Public Sector Entities Project.

The NWU says the project was completed recently by KPMG Peat Marwick and Partners.

In a letter to State Minister Michael Peart, NWU president, Danny Roberts, said copies of the draft report are now with the Public Enterprises Division of the ministry. Mr. Roberts said the union is awaiting a copy of the report, relating to Container Services Limited, to allow the union to make its input into the final document.

He said the union had made a proposal on December 6 to the ministry outlining a programme for Container Services Limited which would improve its efficiency and effectiveness. Mr. Roberts said the union had submitted proposals to former state minister, Donald Buchanan, outlining measures to expand the present facilities so as to double the number of containers processed on a monthly basis from 1,000 to 2,000.

These measures, he claimed, would earn the government additional revenue of approximately J$120-million per year. Mr. Roberts said the proposal would also provide 60 additional jobs and reduce the entry of contraband goods and under-invoicing.

He said the union is also expecting a confirmation of a meeting with the appropriate committee in the Ministry of Finance, which is charged with the responsibility for finalising the draft before submission.
