Grantley Culbard is CCWU's new general secretary

Stabroek News, 5 July 2000

The General Council of the Clerical and Commercial Workers' Union (CCWU) has elected Grantley Culbard as its new General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

The CCWU said in a press release yesterday that Culbard was elected at a General Council meeting at the union's headquarters, Clerico House, last Thursday. He was previously a field secretary of the union and a former research officer of the Caribbean Congress of Labour (CCL).

Culbard succeeds Birchmore Philadelphia who died last September. Albert Alstrom who is the Principal Assistant Secretary had acted as General Secretary up to Culbard's election.

The new CEO, the release stated, brings to the job a wealth of experience acquired over 31 years of active trade union work, with the last 15 years in his CCL post.

According to the release, among Culbard's priorities will be an intensive drive to bring more workers into the union and plans to strengthen administrative capabilities to meet the challenges of the new millennium.
