Globalization of Trade—Maintaining Canada's Federation under the Constitution and the Charter of Rights
Liberal Convention resolution on MAI, 23 March 1998
Whereas the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms provides Canadian Citizens "a voice" in the democratic process of society under the Federation of Canada; and
Whereas the current role of all levels of Canadian Government is to adhere to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Rules and Regulations of the Canadian Constitution to protect and govern Canadian society; and
Whereas under the current laws of international trade including the Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) the social welfare of Canadians remains a priority; and
Whereas any globalization of trade of all markets adhere to the current laws and best interests of Canadians.
Be it resolved that the social welfare of all Canadians and all properties of land and resources under the current Federation of Canada and Constitution remain unaffected by any world trade agreement, such as the Multilateral Agreement on Investment.
Be it further resolved that the role of all levels of Canadian government maintain their jurisdiction to protect the social welfare and best interests of Canadian citizens, culture and society; and
Be it further resolved that the federal government of Canada establish national strategies and national standards to protect all Canadian citizens under any world trade agreement, such as the Multilateral Agreement on Investment so that it cannot override current Canadian laws and the Constitution.
