Call to all trade union workers and their organizations!

CAW flyer, 10 May 2000

I am passing on the following flyer. It would be great if as many activists from the Toronto area as possible would attend this very important mass picket and rally.

The struck plant is on Hwy # 7 just a bit west of Highway 400. The address is 3131 Hwy #7, Concord Ontario.

For any further info Call CAW lcl 112 ar (416) 635-5988

We, members of CAW Local 112, are on strike against the Toromont CAT corporation. We have been on strike since April 10 th and we are resolved to resist the efforts of our employer to BUST OUR UNION and to deny us an equitable contract.

They have begun to hire SCAB workers to REPLACE US. They have put out advertisements for our jobs in the Toronto Sun and possibly other big city and regional papers at rates of pay well below the negotiated levels that exist today.

Toromont management has forced a strike upon us in order to break our union. They demanded major concessions that we simply could not accept.=20 While the union bargaining committee made every effort to accommodate the changing needs of Toromont, the company refused to consider adequate compensation for the radical alterations we were making to our working and family lives. This strike is NOT about wages and benefits. It is about the right of workers to organize and bargain collectively with their employer.

YOU have a stake in our fight. We cannot allow any employer to bust any union organized plant anywhere. We are mobilizing our membership and allies to resist this attack on our unit and we ask that you, our brothers and sisters, will join us in this struggle to defend our union.

Just last week-end, at the first CAW Youth Conference, National President of the CAW, Buzz Hargrove described Toromont as "an employer [who] will work like hell to break the union--and has a long history of anti-unionism." We have had a union at the Concord facility for 30 years.

Toromont Industries is a country-wide organization and their attempt to break our union is part of a much larger campaign to make itself a UNION-FREE corporation.

We are organizing a MASS-PICKET and RALLY at the main Concord facility at the southwest corner of Hwy. #7 and Jane Street. Bring as many of your friends, families, and co-workers as possible to support this very important struggle. =20
