Mission Statement of the Friends of the Malcolm X Memorial Museum
5 December 1997
We, the Friends of the Malcolm X Memorial Museum,
have come together in the Spirit of Brother Malcolm to help in
establishing a living memorial to El Hajj Malik Shabazz (Brother
Malcolm X) rooted in the struggle for Black Liberation.
We recognize that the Memorial Museum grows out of
a long community struggle to save the Audubon Ballroom and to
transform it into a site dedicated to the powerful legacy of Brother
Malcolm. Some of us were directly involved in that struggle and
acknowledge that, although we did not achieve our ideal goal, we
did establish a space that is permanently allocated to the archiving
and memorializing the life and times of Brother Malcolm.
It is in this sense that our goals are:
To help provide a repository for the collection, archival and display of
Malcolm X artifacts, memorabilia and published materials
To help inform and educate our immediate and global communities
that are dedicated to developing strategies and solutions for Human Rights
and Social Change based on the writings and teachings of El Hajj Malik
Shabazz.
To help in establishing the Museum as an official center for the cogent
study and discussion of Brother Malcolm X, highlighting his power as
human being, neighbor, friend, community leader, husband, father and
freedom fighter.
To help empower a future of social activists and Human Rights advocates
with the organizational tools Brother Malcolm X developed through his years
of research , struggle and study.
To utilize the Museum space for cultural and social activities that will aid
our Black and Latino communities in their efforts to inform and raise cultural
consciousness among our people=96 just like Brother Malcolm was doing before
his untimely assassination.
We Continue In the Spirit of Brother Malcolm X
