Support the struggle to achieve the demands of the workers of Tobacco Company in Suleimanyia-Iraq

By Sadiq Aziz, 2 March 2001

The administration of the tobacco factory which, belongs to the ministry of industry and energy, of the PUK's government, issued an order which turn more than 1500 workers of this company to the reserve (working force). By this, the administration has cut down 200 dinar (the Iraqi currency) from each of the workers. According to this order the Laid off workers will only get the official salary, which in best cases does not exceed 150 dinar. So the workers have lost all the concession and rewards. The administration has justified this, as usual, by slow down of the production.

This is part of wider measures by the PUK, which aim to slash the concessions and rewards, and deny any responsibility towards the rights and demands of the workers.

The working-class in Iraqi Kurdistan has suffered badly from poverty and deprivation under the rule of Kurdish nationalist and Islamic parties for the last 10 years. Every now and then hundreds of workers are sacked and their factories are shut down, The wages have reached the lowest level ever, so that, the monthly salary is enough to keep a family alive for few days only. Jobs are for the members and supporters of the ruling parties only. The leaders and activists are continuously harassed and they are targets for different kinds of oppression.

Workers everywhere!

Workers of cement, textile, roads, health, municipality, water system and power!

Workers of private section!

Unemployed!

Your comrades, the sacked workers of Tobacco Company, are in dire need of your support. The policy of sacking workers, and servants, Imposing the worst working conditions on them, forcing workers to accept trivial wages under the horrible economic and political conditions in Iraqi Kurdistan which is politically unstable have become the actual and serious policies of the ruling Kurdish parties. The only way, which enables the workers to fight back against these campaigns and anti- workers policies, is by uniting and solidarity. Adhere of the workers to the organisations at the working and living places is not only necessary to stop the campaigns of working-class enemies but its vital to achieve their social and economical aims. Another important issue, the leaders of our class have to struggle for is the support and solidarity of their comrades worldwide. We have to gain the support of the leftist, worker and communist organisations and parties.

The Worker Communist party of Iraq will do all in its power to achieve this task as one of the important tasks to win the demands of Tobacco Company.

Long lives the struggle of working class for a better world.
