Indian power workers strike over pay

BBC World Service, Tuesday, August 4, 1998, published at 11:49 GMT 12:49 UK

Workers at the biggest power generating company in the Indian states of Bihar and West Bengal have gone on strike demanding higher pay.

The workers from the Damoder Valley Corporation, or DVC, say they will strike indefinitely if their demands are not met.

Company officials have described the strike as illegal and say they have alerted the army to help them maintain power production.

The DVC provides West Bengal and Bihar with nearly half its power supply.
