KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya plans to set up a new faculty, the Faculty of International and Regional Studies, to reflect Malaysia's status and role in the world.

UM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Datuk Prof Dr Osman Bakar said the faculty would be set up by early next year, comprising three departments: South-East Asian Studies, East Asian Studies, and Strategic and International Studies.

He said another department for South Asian Studies, which was being set up, would also come under the new faculty.

Prof Osman said UM, which currently has 11 faculties and three centres, would submit an application to the Education Ministry to set up the new faculty.

"We want to produce graduates who are knowledgeable about these regions and the issues affecting them," he added.

Two new programmes would also be offered under the faculty European Studies and Latin American Studies, Prof Osman told reporters after signing an agreement between UM and South Korean company Henikwon Corporation Sdn Bhd to finance scholarships for students majoring in Korean Studies.

Korean Studies is one of three disciplines offered under the Department of East Asian Studies.
