Veteran Trade Unionist Dies

Panafrican News Agency (Dakar), 3 March 2001

Veteran trade unionist and a long serving secretary-general of the Kenya National Union of Teachers, Ambrose Adongo died in Nairobi Friday after a protracted illness.

Adongo, 64, was a fiery trade unionist who remained unchallenged as the union's boss for three decades due to his astute articulation of trade union politics.

Born in Western Kenya, Adongo served as teacher in the late 1960s from whence he sprang a long career as a trade unionist.

Adongo rose to the position of president of the All-African Teachers Association and vice-president of the World Conference of Teachers Associations.

Through his articulation of trade unionism, Adongo on many occasions challenged education administrators in Kenya.

His efforts were rewarded when the government offered the 150-200 percent salary increment which teachers demanded in protest.

Politicians however, did not have kind words for him, with some calling him a "fool and dissident" while others referred to him as an enemy of the people.
