Burundian students thrown out after protest

BBC World Service, Tuesday 5 May 1998, published at 17:41 GMT 18:41 UK

The authorities at Bujumbura University in Burundi have moved to end a two-week stand-off with some three-thousand students who have been boycotting classes to press their demands for unpaid grants and allowances.

The university's board of directors has decided to expell all those who participated in the strike -- but offered them the chance of re-registering for classes by today.

The students have called off their strike but most of them refused to re-register.

The BBC correspondent in Burundi says those who don't re-register will effectively be barred from classes until October.
