RDP-growth and development strategy

ANC Press Statement
Tues 27 February 1996

The outline of the Growth and Development Strategy unveiled by Deputy President Thabo Mbeki in Cape Town on Monday 26 February confirms the determination of Government to take the country out of the quagmire of "jobless growth."

The ANC reiterates its commitment to involve the masses of our people to ensure that they remain active participants in development. Through its constitutional structures, the ANC will continue to make an input into the process; and it will seek to mobilise the people to take their destiny into their own hands and achieve the targets that have been identified.

The National Growth and Development Strategy is an integral part of and is informed by the central objectives of the Reconstruction and Development Programme, namely:

  • job creation
  • human resource development
  • infrastructural and service delivery
  • combatting crime and creation of a safe environment for all our people
  • transformation of the state machinery and the civil service
  • building social security for all.

The ANC calls on all South Africans - people in government, private sector, workers and all communities to ensure accelerated growth and development so that we can attain a better life for all.
