Whither social democracy?

From EW Plawiuk <plawiuk@CONNECT.AB.CA>, 14 May 1999

The New Democrats embrace third way, but which way for the Canadian left?

Like other social democratic parties around the world, the Canadian Federal New Democratic Party has decided that it will shift to the right to embrace the new political realities of globalization.

Modeling themselves on Tony Blairs 'New Labour' in the UK, the NDP have accepted the fatalism of 'There Is No Alternative' (TINA) if they hope to become the government of Canadian capitalism. In doing so they have already begun to alienate their allies, labour, youth, women, minorities.

The Federal Covention is this summer and we encourage all socialists, in or out of the party to contribute to the critique of social democracy, the rebirth of socialism in the global economy, and the need for a Left Opposition in Canada in all political and social movements.
