GUANGZHOU, June 30 (Xinhua)—South China's Guangdong province exported 7.97 billion U.S. dollars worth of high-tech products during the first five months this year, about 46 percent of the country's total.

The volume represents an increase of 36 percent over the same period last year, according to statistics released by Guangdong provincial customs.

Guangdong also exported 20.03 billion U.S. dollars worth of electronic and machinery products during the five months, up 12.9 percent over the same period last year, and 58 percent of the province's total exports.

The province reported slower growth in foreign trade during the five months, mainly due to the impact of slower economic growth in major industrialized countries.

Guangdong's foreign trade in the first five months totaled 66.7 billion U.S. dollars, up 5 percent over the same period last year.
