City of Beijing to Demolish Uygur Neighborhood

China News Digest, 26 November 2002

[CND, 11/26/02] The city of Beijing has decided to demolish the Xinjiang Village in the Ganjiakou area, displacing several hundred people and the city's last community of Xinjiang natives, the South China Morning Post reported.

The village is composed of single storey brick houses in a narrow alley. Now the walls of these houses have demolish marked all over.

Officials gave no explanation for the demolition. Last year, the city's previous Xinjiang Village at Weigongcun was removed. Authorities were saying the neighbourhood layout impeded traffic and created other nuisances. (Dong LIU)
